With his 93rd birthday coming up on Monday, former president Nelson Mandela has retreated home to Qunu, outside Mthatha.Mandela arrived on a military medical aircraft at the Mthatha Airport just after 2.30pm, and all journalists were kept at bay while Madiba was whisked away by a convoy of traffic authority vehicles, police and VIP protection unit members and ambulances.
No pictures were to be taken and General Zola Dabula, head of clinical services in the SANDF, "politely" asked reporters to leave the premises immediately ahead of introducing them to Tata Madiba: "I do not care whether you are a re reporter from SABC or the Daily Dispatch. Not anyone can do a Mandela story, so I will ask you gentlemen to leave," Dabula said.
It is the second time that Mandela has visited his rural home since he was discharged from hospital earlier this year.
