Meryl Streep softening the Iron Lady

Margaret Thatcher has gone down in history as one of Britain's  most iconic politicians -  Prime Minister of the UK from 1979 to 1990, her strong will, strict policies and political strength quickly earned her the title of the “Iron Lady”.

I think most would agree that creating a movie about such a figure – who is still alive (Thatcher being 86 years old now) -  is asking for some trouble but the movie doesn't too deeply into her politics as we would expect...

Showed looking back on her life, director Phyllida Lloyd said that the movie is like “a Shakespearean story about power and loss, and the cost of a huge life, and letting go," he told Reuters. "You needed someone of the magnitude of Meryl Streep to take on Margaret Thatcher's size and personality. You needed a superstar to play a superstar," Lloyd said.

More than a movie biography of Thatcher and her politics, Streep and the film-makers sought to draw out the human element of Thatchers life, and look to the Iron Lady herself.
